Turf Testimonials

I’ve been doing CE for 2 years. After 6 years of declining bone density despite taking prescribed medication my doctor told me that I was the kind of person that will tend to get frail as I age, and that the only thing that could turn that around is to lift heavy weights. Most importantly, by doing the C.E. Barbell Program my bone density has remained stable though I no longer take medication. I also enjoy the companionship and inspiration of the other CE members seeking to improve and maintain their health. The trained coaches keep a watchful eye on our form which helps make even heavy lifting safe….. “Don’t call me Frail!!”
– Janette Braaten

“Running, biking and Nordic skiing are my passions. I have been aware for a long time of the critical need for weight training. I worked the weights without a specific plan or coaching, with limited success. When I saw a runner friend in barbell, I asked about the class. After a enthusiastic referral I signed up for the Barbell Program. My goals were strength training of opposing muscle groups, core strength and instruction to avoid injury! I was in good condition, but the class kicked conditioning up a notch or two. There hasn’t been any burn out as the programs change regularly. The coaches are superb in the attention to form, encouragement and enthusiasm. I can only assess the effect on my running and biking at this time, the same hills both in running and biking aren’t as tough and downhill running is much improved due to balanced leg conditioning. Can’t wait for ski season!”
– Mike Fraser, avid outdoorsman

I have participated in these programs since the introduction of Parisi “Adult Total Conditioning”. That program morphed into the current Total Conditioning Program which I participated in for 4-5 years. I switched over to MetCon about 2 years ago and love the program. It is a great mix of weight training and cardio – which is important to me at my age.I want to stay in shape, but I also wnat to slow the natural loss of strength and muscle mass. MetCon 3 times per week provides the solution to those goals!! MetCon is great for all ages. You can push yourself to get stronger, faster and perform at a higher level in daily activities. There is also the fun and motivation that comes from the team that you workout with. It is a great program with excellent coaches – I would recommend it to anyone.
– Dave Waldenberg
Twenty-three years ago, I joined Logan Fitness Center (The Summit). I stayed active most of my life, but in my late 40s and early 50s everything changed—knee osteoarthritis, surgery, hormonal shifts, weight gain, muscle loss, decreased balance, and constant fatigue. As a physical therapist, I knew exactly what was happening: without progressive strength training, adults lose 3–8% of their muscle per decade. I could feel myself slipping toward frailty, and I wasn’t willing to let that happen.
Six months post–knee replacement, I joined the Competitive Edge barbell program. I started slowly—just the bar—showing up consistently, learning technique, and gradually increasing strength. Over time, I added a third weekly session, improved my nutrition, incorporated interval training, and eventually joined a coached group that prepared me for my first powerlifting meet at age 54.
Two and a half years later, the results were beyond what I thought possible: 17% body fat lost, huge strength and muscle gains, renewed energy, and confidence I’ve never felt before. Today at 56, I squat 1.75x my bodyweight, bench my bodyweight, deadlift 2.5x my bodyweight, and can do 18 pull-ups. I just competed in my fifth meet—alongside our team that has set 22 state records, and 1 National record since 2024. I have qualified for USPA Nationals, and I am training to compete in Anaheim at the end of May.
The coaches and community made all the difference. They write the programs, ensure safety, push us, support us, and create an environment where progress is inevitable.
If you’re on a similar path, hear this: It is never too late to start. Your strength, longevity, and independence depend on it. Step outside your comfort zone—you might just change your entire life.

Joey Arnold
NCSF Certified Personal Trainer
CrossFit L-2
CrossFit WeightLifting
CrossFit Gymnastics
CrossFit Kids
CrossFit Kettle Bell
West Side Barbell Special strengths certified
Aerobic Capacity Ambassador
Joey has been a certified trainer since 2008. He is happily married to Rachel, with 2 amazing little boys, Elek and Oliver. I love barbells, food (I make a mean burger) and horror movies! Joey first touched a barbell at age 12, and instantly fell in love with the process of progress. How strong could one get he thought?
He grew up playing football, and in his 20s, competed in powerlifting, breaking the junior 20-23 APF bench press record in the raw drug tested division in 2009.
Joey has done a lot of CrossFit, making it to the regional stage four times. 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Notably did some Olympic lifting, Spartan Races, and Triathlons all for the sake of learning the preparation and demands of these events. Joey wanted to know how to do it all, and when he began this journey as a trainer, he was instantly fascinated with how movements work for us as humans, and figuring out the problems when it came to moving and feeling better. Joey couldn’t afford school, so he read and absorbed as much of the literature as he could and was lucky enough to learn from amazing and established people in the industry. Joey believes he is one of the lucky ones to have found their calling in life at a young age, and can’t wait to share that passion with people he’s lucky enough to work with every single day.

‘There is nothing impossible to him who will try.’ – Alexander the Great
“Whether you are looking to increase strength, lose weight, improve sports performance, or just want to increase your overall fitness, I am committed to empowering you to reach your goals through individualized coaching, planning, and motivational strategies. I started right where most of you are, overwhelmed with the amount of information available to the new fitness enthusiast. From the beginning, I fell in love with lifting and the benefits that came along with it. After years of learning, competing in both powerlifting and weightlifting and coaching others, I decided to turn my passion into my career to help others avoid the pitfalls of myths and misinformation. I emphasize proper exercise form to ensure a safe and productive session and help to instill confidence in you and your abilities to not just achieve your current fitness goals, but to surpass them.”
