In the past, surgeons made large incisions in skin and muscle so that they could directly see and work on the area of concern. This is called open surgery. Today physicians still perform open surgery, but they can also perform many gynecologic procedures using minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgery with da Vinci technology. Both minimally invasive approaches require one or a few small incisions that doctors use to insert surgical equipment and a camera for viewing. In laparoscopic surgery, doctors use special long-handled tools to perform surgery while viewing magnified images from the laparoscope (camera) on a video screen.
Patient Resources
Save a Sister: The Save a Sister initiative is a collaboration among Logan Health Medical Center, Logan Health – Whitefish and the Flathead City-County Health Department, with a mission to lessen the impact of breast cancer in our community. The initiative’s goals are to improve women’s access to screening mammography, educate the community, and promote breast cancer awareness and prevention through outreach activities. Save a Sister also supports postoperative durable goods that often are not paid for by insurance. All funds stay in the local area.
Mobile Mammography: Logan Health’s Mobile Mammography Coach reaches women who are unable to come to the on-site imaging center. The mobile unit is helping eliminate barriers by making it faster and more convenient for women in rural Montana to have a screening mammogram, the key to lifesaving early detection of breast cancer. Yearly mammograms are covered by Medicare and most insurance companies.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recently lowered the recommended age for breast cancer screening to women with average risk. They now recommend all women get screened for breast cancer every other year starting at age 40, rather than age 50. To schedule your mammogram, sign up here or visit the Logan Health Medical Center for our Walk-In mammography service Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. For more information on this recent change, see the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Bulletin.
