Surgical oncology is a specialty that focuses on the surgical treatment of a variety of tumors, the most common being breast cancer, colorectal cancer, melanoma and endocrine tumors.

Surgical oncologists provide the most sophisticated and comprehensive cancer care, because of their training and experience in only treating cancers. Since we understand all aspects of cancer care, we base our recommendations on the latest advances in surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Surgical procedures unique to our practice include sentinel lymph node biopsy and dissection, liver and lung ablation, and coordination with liver directed therapies. Surgical oncologists also are capable of managing complex procedures not commonly performed by non-oncology trained surgeons such as pancreatic whipple, liver and multivisceral resection.

Common referrals to a surgical oncologist include:

  • Melanoma/skin cancers
  • Pancreatic cancer or obstructive jaundice
  • Pancreatic mass or cyst
  • Sarcoma
  • Lymph node enlargement
  • Colon or rectal cancer
  • Liver metastasis from colorectal cancer
  • Liver mass
  • Bile duct cancer
  • Gastric (stomach) cancer or mass
  • Thyroid cancer or nodule
  • Abdominal, retroperitoneal or pelvic mass
  • Adrenal mass, adenoma or pheochromocytoma

We work collectively with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other medical specialties so that all aspects of our patients’ care are thoroughly reviewed. This provides a coordinated team approach that has been proven to increase cure rates and make our patients more comfortable and informed. Surgical oncologists’ goals are to maximize functional outcomes in balance with the best possible cancer survival.
