Reconstructive Procedures

People who need reconstructive plastic surgery travel from Missoula and Helena to our Kalispell practice because of our board-certified plastic surgeons’ reputation for producing excellent results in even the most difficult cases. When performed by experienced surgeons, reconstructive plastic surgery restores both form and function or corrects concerns created by congenital issues, trauma, or medical conditions such as cancer.

Cosmetic vs. Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

While the motivations for individuals seeking reconstructive surgery may differ from those pursuing cosmetic plastic surgery, both types of procedures share common goals. In our practice, our surgeons are dedicated to achieving optimal cosmetic results in every reconstructive surgery they perform. During consultations, surgeons thoroughly discuss procedures with patients, providing detailed descriptions of potential outcomes. This open communication ensures that patients’ expectations align with the possible results, fostering a collaborative approach to achieving their desired outcomes.

Reconstructive Procedure Options

Breast Reconstruction– reconstructive breast surgery following mastectomy is an option that many women diagnosed with breast cancer choose.  Breast reconstruction may use tissue expanders and implants or create a breast with the patient’s own tissue taken from another part of the body through advanced microsurgery techniques.

  • Tissue expander and Implant reconstruction: After mastectomy a tissue expander is placed under the skin.  Over a few months this tissue expander is filled with sterile saline that will help expand the skin to the desired size to then accommodate an implant.  A second surgery will be done to place the implant.  In some cases, an implant can be placed without the need of a tissue expander.
  • DIEP flap reconstruction: A DIEP flap reconstruction takes the tissues and blood vessels from the abdomen and reconnects them, through microsurgery techniques, into the area that has been removed from the mastectomy.
  • Latissimus flap reconstruction: A Latissimus flap takes tissues, vessels, and the latissimus muscle to create a new breast.  This type of flap rotates into place and the original blood supply will stay intact.
  • TUG flap reconstruction: A TUG flap reconstruction takes tissue and vessels from the inner thigh, and similar to the DIEP flap, reconnects them through microsurgery, creating a new breast.
  • Revision surgeries, scar revisions, Fat grafting: After a reconstructive surgery it is often necessary to revise or perform additional procedures to reach the desired result.
  • Nipple reconstruction: Nipple reconstruction can be done surgically or by 3D tattooing
  • Oncoplastic breast reduction: This procedure can sometimes be combined with breast conservation therapy to maximize the aesthetic results.

Breast and Body Contouring

  • Breast lift: A breast lift or mastopexy can help elevate the breast tissue and reposition your nipple to a more youthful position.
  • Breast reduction: A breast reduction, also known as a reduction mammaplasty, is a surgery that removes skin and breast tissue to reshape the breast into a smaller size.
  • Breast implants: Breast implants can used to enhance, reshape, or recreate the breast.  Implant options include saline filled or silicone filled and can be placed under the pectoral muscle or over the pectoral muscle.  Your plastic surgeon will work with you to make these decisions.
  • Panniculectomy: A panniculectomy removes excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen.  It does not correct loose skin on the upper abdomen.
  • Abdominoplasty: An abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck can remove excess skin and fat across the entire abdomen.
  • Brachioplasty: A brachioplasty or arm lift is done to remove loose skin on the upper arm.  It is often done to reshape the upper arm after significant weight loss that has left the patient with excess skin.
  • Thighplasty: A thighplasty or thigh lift can be done to tighten and improve the appearance of the thighs by removing loose skin and fat.

Head and Neck

  • Blepharoplasty
  • Mohs reconstruction
  • Facial trauma reconstruction

Extremity

  • Soft tissue reconstruction of upper and lower extremity
  • Pedicled and free flap operations
  • Skin grafting after trauma or cancer resection
