NVH Local Area
Big Mountain North Valley Hospital is located in the beautiful Flathead Valley in northwest Montana. The area is nicknamed “the banana belt” because of its relatively warm winters compared to other locations at 48 degrees north latitude. The Flathead Valley is a playground of outdoor activities from hiking, biking, boating, fishing and whitewater rafting in the summer to downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling and ice skating in the winter.

The laid-back atmosphere of Whitefish makes this tight-knit community a happy and warm place to live or visit. This authentic mountain town sets the scene for a unique living experience in the beauty of the Rocky Mountain wilderness near Glacier National Park. Every winter the hearty residents band together with celebrations like the Whitefish Winter Carnival, complete with a hometown parade, penguin plunge, yetis, Vikings, snow sculptures and nonstop events. Horses and skiers unite in the skijoring races that illustrate the crossover of the old West with modern-day adventures. Within sight of most of the Flathead Valley is Whitefish Mountain Resort, a four-season recreation area named in the top 21 ski resorts in the U.S. for 2013 by Ski Magazine.

Glacier National Park is open year-round to explore the hanging valleys and emerald peaks of this World Heritage Site, just 25 miles from Whitefish. Fish a clear mountain stream, hike an alpine trail or embark on a historic driving tour of the famed Going-to-the-Sun Road. More than 700 miles of well-marked trails provide an incredible variety of hiking to explore mountain lakes, glaciers, plant life, and glimpses of grizzly and black bears, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, moose, deer and more.

Next to Whitefish is Columbia Falls, known as the Gateway to Glacier. The Flathead River traverses through this family-friendly town, providing a variety of fishing and kayaking spots.

The communities of Kalispell, Bigfork, Lakeside and Somers are also close by. Kalispell is the home of Flathead Valley Community College, one of the leading community colleges in the country, which offers students the ability to obtain four-year degrees through its university partnerships. The shopping hub is located in Kalispell with a wide variety of large retailers in home improvement, clothing, pet supplies, variety and more. Bigfork, Lakeside and Somers line the northern shores of Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. These quaint little villages are perfect for water sports and browsing the shops and restaurants.
