Logan Health has received a $15,000 Patient Transportation Grant from the American Cancer Society (ACS) to support transportation assistance for eligible cancer patients who experience barriers to cancer care.
The funding will directly support transportation assistance for patients who face barriers getting to and from cancer-related treatment appointments. Grant funds can be used for services such as gas cards, ride-share services, cab vouchers, non-emergency medical transport and parking passes based on eligibility, availability, and program guidelines.
For many patients in Northwest Montana, distance and cost can stand in the way of timely care. Patients often travel long miles from rural communities in Flathead, Lincoln, Sanders, Lake and Glacier counties to receive treatment. Without reliable transportation, some patients may delay or miss appointments, potentially impacting outcomes.
“This grant allows us to remove one of the biggest barriers to cancer care in our region: transportation,” said physician executive Dr. Melissa Kaptanian. “No patient should have to choose between paying for gas and getting to treatment.”
According to the American Cancer Society, transportation challenges are one of the most cited obstacles for cancer patients nationwide. The ACS Patient Transportation Grant program is designed to help health systems like Logan Health provide direct, practical support so patients can follow their prescribed treatment plans.
Grant funds must be used exclusively for transportation assistance related to cancer treatment and cannot be used for administrative expenses. Logan Health will track the number of patients served and rides provided throughout the 12-month grant cycle, which runs through March 31, 2027.
Patients receiving cancer care at Logan Health who are experiencing transportation barriers are encouraged to speak with their care team, nurse navigator or social worker to learn about available assistance.
