A new report from the Lown Institute, a nonpartisan and independent health care think tank, finds that Logan Health Medical Center (LHMC) is among the top 20% of nonprofit hospitals in the country for the amount of investment allocated to their community. The ranking earned LHMC the designation of Top Hospital.

Nonprofit hospitals are exempt from paying most federal, state, and local taxes in exchange for providing free or discounted care and programs that address community health needs – things like substance abuse treatment, affordable housing, primary care, and mental health services.

The study, which examined more than 2,400 nonprofit hospitals in the United States, found that LHMC’s costs associated with community investment outweighed the tax breaks they received. Those costs consisted of charity care, uncompensated cost of care, subsidized health services, community health improvement, health professional education and community-building activities.

“Our commitment has always been to support the health care needs of the communities we serve and caring for our patients,” said Kevin Abel, President of Logan Health Medical Center. “The recent report from the Lown Institute demonstrates our dedication to upholding our mission of providing accessible and equitable health care to all individuals. We believe that investing in the well-being of our community is not just a responsibility, but a privilege and we are honored to be recognized for our efforts in ensuring that everyone has access to the care and support they need to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.”
