Each year on May 20, healthcare organizations around the world observe Clinical Trials Day, recognizing the vital role research plays in advancing medicine and improving lives. The date commemorates a landmark moment in 1747 when Scottish physician James Lind conducted one of the first controlled clinical studies, laying the foundation for modern clinical research.

Today, that legacy continues in large and small communities, including northwest Montana. Logan Health brings cutting-edge clinical trials to patients who might otherwise have to travel hundreds of miles for advanced care.

Clinical trials are essential to developing new medications and treatments, providing the scientific evidence needed to ensure therapies are safe and effective. They also offer patients early access to promising new therapies, often years before they are widely available.

At Logan Health, the research program is doing exactly that.

From oncology to cardiology, endocrinology and rheumatology, Logan Health’s clinical trials program connects local patients with innovative treatments across a wide range of specialties. The program is led by a dedicated team of physicians, nurses and clinical research coordinators who work closely with patients to match them with appropriate studies and guide them through the process.

For patients in rural Montana, this access can be life changing.

“Clinical trials can be a benefit to patients as they may provide access to new and novel medications that are not available to the general public,” according to Dr. Roger Diegel. Clinical trials also provide more personalized care, including closer monitoring, additional lab work and frequent check-ins, benefits that often lead to improved outcomes and a stronger connection between patients and their care teams.

That impact is already being felt across the region. In one example, a local patient living with rheumatoid arthritis regained mobility and quality of life after enrolling in a clinical trial through Logan Health. After struggling with traditional treatments, participation in a study helped him return to everyday activities, from working in his shop to spending time with family.

Stories like these highlight the broader importance of clinical trials, not only for individual patients, but for entire communities. In rural areas, access to advanced care can be limited. By offering clinical trials locally, Logan Health is helping bridge that gap, ensuring patients don’t have to leave home to receive innovative, potentially life-saving treatments.

Clinical Trials Day serves as a reminder that behind every new medication or breakthrough therapy is a partnership between researchers and patients. It is also an opportunity to recognize the healthcare professionals who bring these opportunities to communities like Kalispell.

As medical research continues to evolve, Logan Health’s commitment to clinical trials ensures that Montana remains part of that progress by bringing hope, innovation and advanced care closer to home.

The public is welcome to visit the main lobby of Logan Health Medical Center (Entrance B) on May 20, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to learn more about the program. Staff will be available to answer questions and share what’s new and upcoming in research.
