Clinical trials have the potential to change a patient’s life, and no one understands this better than Michael Smith. A former river guide and home builder, Michael has battled debilitating rheumatoid arthritis for years, at one point even relying on a walker for mobility.
His rheumatologist, Dr. Roger Diegel, initially prescribed a treatment that provided some relief, but did not fully address his pain and joint damage. At one of Michael’s appointments, Dr. Diegel asked if he would like to be a part of a clinical study and receive a trial drug at no cost. Michael jumped at the chance.
While the medication initially had a positive impact, its effectiveness waned over time. In response, Dr. Diegel helped Michael enroll in a different clinical trial. This time, his condition improved dramatically.
“I started to feel like myself again and was doing more things,” he said. “Being a father, it is really important to me to be able to take care of my kids, and now I was able to.” As he regained strength day by day, Michael began to look forward to interacting with his medical team and gaining a deeper understanding about his condition.
He continued treatment, going in for blood tests and appointments on a weekly basis, and his condition improved. While he still faces the challenges and flare-ups associated with rheumatoid arthritis, he can now build again in his workshop and enjoys fishing with friends and family. Throughout the years, the benefits of the clinical trial — restored strength, trust in his clinical team, and peace of mind — have made significant differences in his life.
“I am a fighter and will never give up,” he said. “Because of my clinical study group team, I’ve always felt that I have caring people in my corner. The coordinator, Jaime, was an angel to deal with and always kept me optimistic about reality, and the doctor and his knowledge helped to calm my nerves when I would flare up. These study groups are way more than just appointments and medicine. I wouldn’t be who I am today without being part of this experience.”
Michael wholeheartedly encourages anyone considering participating in a clinical trial. “Don’t hesitate! Go for it, 100 percent. The knowledge and comfort you will get is priceless. It also helps knowing that your own data can help others in the future.”
For individuals currently involved in a clinical trial, he offers this advice. “When in a trial, always remind yourself it is a trial. It may take more than one or two different medications to get where you need to be. Most importantly, never give up. Be open and honest about your situation and enjoy life to the best of your ability. Remind yourself that you are in good hands.”
