Logan Health Medical Center (LHMC) in Kalispell was recently named one of 78 hospitals nationally to achieve meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care by the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP). As a participant in the ACS NSQIP, LHMC is required to track the outcomes of surgical procedures and collect data related to patient safety and surgical quality. That data is then analyzed by the ACS and reported back to the hospital.

This year, the meritorious hospitals represented approximately ten percent of the 607 ACS NSQIP eligible hospitals. LHMC was the only hospital in Montana to be recognized.

“This outstanding performance that Logan Health Medical Center has demonstrated in surgical care is the direct result of the tremendous dedication and unwavering efforts of all of the members of our health care team every day,” says James Cromie, MD, FACS, director of surgical quality at Logan Health. “Not only does Logan Health rank in the top 10% of all participating hospitals nationwide, but we are the only one of the three NSQIP medical centers in Montana to achieve this recognition. I feel deeply honored to work amongst such exceptional health care professionals, at all levels of the care continuum at this organization, where there is a culture of commitment to providing the best care possible, and making a difference in our community day in and day out.”

Each composite score was determined through a weighted formula combining eight different outcomes of separate clinical areas: mortality, cardiac (cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction), pneumonia, unplanned intubation, ventilator use for more than 48 hours, renal failure, surgical site infection and urinary tract infection. The 78 commended hospitals achieved the distinction based on their outstanding composite quality score across those eight areas.

ACD NSQIP is the only nationally validated quality improvement program that tracks and enhances the care of surgical patients. This program measures actual surgical results 30 days postoperatively, as well as adjusting risk based on patient characteristics to compensate for differences among patient populations and acuity levels.

With some of the region’s most skilled surgeons, over a dozen surgical subspecialties and spacious, modern facilities, LHMC proudly offers some of the highest quality personalized care for patients in the northwestern United States and into Canada.
