High-Performing Hospital

The Hospital Improvement and Innovation Network (HIIN) recently recognized North Valley Hospital as a High-Performing Hospital. The HIIN gives this recognition to hospitals that achieved their goals of either maintaining a zero rate or achieving a 20 percent reduction in measures such as patient falls with injury, pressure ulcers and hospital-acquired infections. North Valley Hospital was one of eight hospitals in the state of Montana to receive this recognition.

Planetree Culture of Safety

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) defines high-reliability organizations as those that “cultivate resilience by relentlessly prioritizing safety over other performance pressures.” North Valley Hospital is consistently ranked as promoting patient safety and employee confidence, which are key factors of high-reliability. High-reliability is “a condition of persistent mindfulness within an organization,” or a culture of safety. This means that a hospital’s culture must encourage transparency and openness and report even small errors that can point to systematic issues.

In 2016 North Valley administered AHRQ’s validated patient safety survey tool, which gives hospitals the opportunity to see how their own safety culture compares to other hospitals nationally. North Valley had high rankings, with 95 percent of employees reporting that they felt like management provides a work environment that promotes patient safety, and 96 percent of people who interact with patients feeling that their co-workers are supportive of one another.

North Valley Hospital continually ranks in the top levels for hospitals statewide and regionally in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare for Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores.

Recent notable numbers include the following: 87 percent of patients rated North Valley Hospital as a 9 or 10 on a scale of 1 to 10, and 90% of patients would recommend the hospital to family and friends. Meanwhile, 85 percent of patients stated that doctors and nurses communicated well, and 89 percent of patients received clear instructions for at-home recovery after discharge. These numbers place NVH in the highest rankings for hospitals throughout the region and the country.

Unified Emergency Preparedness

Kalispell Regional Healthcare prioritizes patient, community and employee safety. In 2017, KRH hired a unified emergency preparedness coordinator to serve all facilities and established a committee to streamline emergency preparedness and procedures at North Valley Hospital and throughout Kalispell Regional Healthcare.

Shared Leadership

The internationally recognized Forum for Shared Governance announced it has awarded shared governance accreditation to North Valley Hospital in 2020. Shared governance is an innovative management model that ensures that nurses are the ones making clinical decisions at the bedside, while allowing them to influence the resources that support those decisions.

Here at North Valley Hospital we call this model "Shared Leadership" a concept that is an important part of the culture as a Planetree Hospital.
