From running and hiking to outdoor boot camps and yoga, there are so many perks to training and living in the Flathead Valley in the summer. But as summer makes way for fall, that doesn’t mean your fitness routine has to stop. In fact, it’s one of the best times to revamp your regimen and embrace some change. Transform your training with the changing of seasons.
While you may love being outdoors during the summer, fall is a great time to commit to something new inside. With the right attitude, you may just fall in love with something you’ve never tried.

“It’s easy to get stagnant with our workouts and just stick to what we know, but try pushing yourself during this motivating season and commit to something completely different and out of your comfort zone,” shares American Council on Exercise-certified, NYC-based personal trainer Miriam Fried.
Turn fall chores into a workout. The orange-red fall leaves in the Flathead Valley are breathtaking, but a pain to clean up. However, by trading out the leaf blower for a good ol' fashioned rake, you can turn leaf clean-up into a scorching workout. According to MyFitnessPal, a 150-pound person can burn 272 calories raking leaves for an hour. Mowing your lawn for the same amount of time can torch about 374 calories. Heavy yard work including landscaping, moving rocks and hauling dirt burns approximately 400-600 calories per hour. Gardening, including pulling weeds and planting bulbs burns approximately 200-400 calories per hour. Roll up those sleeves this fall and burn some calories!
Use caution, the cooler temps will make your muscles a bit tighter. It’s important to do a good warm-up before your workouts, whether you’re heading outdoors or staying inside. Try taking a brisk morning walk before you start the day at full speed. Cooler temps may require more warm-up sets or stretching to make sure muscles and tendons and ligaments are as supple as they were in the summer heat. (Adventure Sports Network, 2017)
Don’t forget to cool down after your workout to prevent any injuries and promote muscle growth.
