What is an upper respiratory infection?

An upper respiratory infection is an inflammation of the nose, throat, sinuses and airways, which is often referred to as the common cold. A sore throat or a sinus infection also may be caused by an upper respiratory infection. Upper respiratory infections are usually caused by a virus.

What are the symptoms of an upper respiratory infection?

Symptoms of a cold include:
  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Congestion
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Mild fever

How is an upper respiratory infection treated?

The common cold usually goes away within a few days to two weeks, and can be treated at home. Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and consider acetaminophen or ibuprofen for relieving mild pain or fever. Antibiotics are not effective for treating cold viruses.

Seek treatment if symptoms do not improve or if your child has a high fever or dehydration.
