What is pink eye?

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is an infection or irritation of the membrane that covers the white part of your eye and the inside of your eyelid. Pink eye is often caused by a viral infection, bacterial infection or allergies.

What are the symptoms of pink eye?

Common symptoms of pink eye, which may occur in one or both eyes, include:
  • Redness in and around the eye
  • Itching or stinging
  • Watering or tearing in the eye
  • Sore or puffy eyes
  • Discharge from the eye that forms a crust around the eyelid

How is pink eye treated?

Pink eye can be extremely contagious. Getting treatment early can prevent you from spreading pink eye to others. Avoid touching your eyes, and wash your hands often.

Your provider may prescribe drops or ointment to treat pink eye. If you wear contact lenses, you may need to stop wearing them until your pink eye has cleared up.
